The Long History Of Tattoos

Since the Neolithic era, people have tattooed themselves. The earliest examples are found on ‘Otzi the Iceman’, a 5,300 year old man found preserved in a glacier on the Italian-Austrian border, who has carbon tattoos on his back, arms and legs. They have also been found on tribesmen from Pazyryk, an Iron Age settlement in Siberia.

Tattoos have also been found on Pazyryk tribesmen, from an Iron Age settlement in Siberia. There is worldwide evidence of tribes using tattoos to identify their members.

There is evidence of tribes using tattoos to identify their members from all over the world, encompassing several different methods of tattooing.

In what is now the Northwest USA, tribal tattoos were used to identify which tribe you belonged to, and also your status within the tribe, with special markings indicating a kill in battle. In the California region, some of the markings on the Yokut tribes marked the locations of the person’s magical power.

Probably the best known tribal tattoos are on the Maori of New Zealand. The impressive artistry of their ‘moko’ designs can cover a whole face and tell the story of the wearer’s adventures within the tribe. These designs are adapted and evolve over time as the tribe member gains more status and achievements.

For it to become a permanent marking, the pigment has to be pushed deep in to the skin’s dermis

To become a permanent mark, tattoo needs to be pushed deep in to the skin’s dermis. Once it is in place, the pigment spreads out through the epidermis and upper dermis, where the hole was made to push the pigment in. As the wound heals, the upper layer of pigment is removed as the damaged skin flakes away, leaving the deeper layer in place.

Over the long term, pigment can migrate down deeper in to the dermis, which can lead to degraded detail in very old tattoos. This migration takes decades so is usually not considered by the person gaining the tattoo, especially if they are doing it for reasons of fashion.

Early tattoos were often made by rubbing ash or other materials in to deliberate cuts or open wounds. These can be seen in modern times on some people who’ve had motorbike accidents, where asphalt from the road has been pressed deep in to a wound, or industrial injuries. You can see the use of needles in the patterns of tattoos found on Egyptian mummies.

Patterns of tattoos found on Egyptian mummies lead archaeologists to believe tattoo needles have been in use for thousands of years. In Polynesia, the Lapitas use needles and comb shapes carved from bone to create elaborate tattoos.

In Polynesia, the Lapita’s used sharpened bone carved in to needles and comb shapes to create elaborate tattoos, with pigment mixed from soot and water. In areas where it grows, bamboo was used. It can be split in to very fine strands which are still strong enough to be used as needles.

In areas where it is available, bamboo was used, which can be split in to very fine strands which are still strong enough to be used as needles.

Rather than having a permanent tattoo, you can use a temporary tattoo transfer, giving you all of the look, but none of the pain. They look just like the real thing, but only last a few days instead of the rest of your life. As a modern alternative!

They are ideal for trying out a. Rather than having a permanent tattoo, you can use a temporary transfer and avoid the pain. before you get permanently inked, or for parties. Very useful for trying out a tattoo before getting a permanent tattoo, or for a party.

The Tattoo History Source Book

$18.08
The Tattoo History Source Book is an exhaustingly thorough, lavishly illustrated collection of historical records of tattooing throughout the world, from ancient times to the present. Collected together in one place, for the first time, are texts by explorers, journalists, physicians, psychiatrists, anthropologists, scholars, novelists, criminologists, and tattoo artists. A brief essay by Gilbert sets each chapter in an historical context. Topics covered include the first written records of tattooing by Greek and Roman authors; the dispersal of tattoo designs and techniques throughout Polynesia; the discovery of Polynesian tattooing by European explorers; Japanese tattooing; the first 19th-century European and American tattoo artists; tattooed British royalty; the invention of the tattooing machine; and tattooing in the circus. The anthology concludes with essays by four prominent contemporary tattoo artists: Tricia Allen, Chuck Eldridge, Lyle Tuttle, and Don Ed Hardy. The references at the end of each section will provide an introduction to the extensive literature that has been inspired by the ancient-but-neglected art of tattooing. Because of its broad historical context, The Tattoo History Source Book will be of interest to the general reader as well as art historians, tattoo fans, neurasthenics, hebephrenics, and cyclothemics. ....read more
