The name tarantula originates from a town called Taranto which is the largest town of the province of Apulia there are many species of tarantula found here and this is where we get the modern day version of the word tarantula from.

Tarantulas start digesting their prey before they even begin sucking the life and juices from their prey buy using their venom which starts the digesting process, but before they find their unsuspecting victim they first have to go on the hunt, not like the normal spider that spins a web and waits, rather they hunt by night while some hunt by day but they are usually shy creatures.

In olden times, Apulia was known for the prevalence of a disease called ‘tarantism’.

When people got this disease known as tarantism, it caused them to have a sudden urge to get up and dance in a wild and fast turning motion

Though strange it might sound or seem, one of the reasons for getting up and dancing seemed to do with the perspiration getting the illness out of the body. Today in Italy you can still find this dance being performed it is the infamous tarantella.

IT is thought that the name tarantula comes from this town Taranto, they called the disease tarantism because they thought these large spiders were the cause of them through their bites. Many people back then if they thought they were bit by this tarantula, would go on to perform this dance, as they believed that it would cure them from this disease!

Thankfully or not so thankfully there was a doctor who made a few sketched of this spider back in the day, this would help people who thought that they had got bitten by this particular spider If someone was unfortunate to be bitten and be able to see the doctor, his most wonderful piece of advice would be to simply play music and dance to the antidote of the tarantulae dance
